you wear my armourless soul

like a ring of smoke

escaping from the tip

of your burning cigarette

and everything I hang in the balance

of that fragile moment

when you raise a finger (gracefully)

and strangle its ascension

with a whisk

no more difficult

than cutting a string

off of a sweater

or saying good-bye,

sending me falling back to earth,

this gravity crucifixion

to mingle with what’s left;

only ash

half-burnt cigarettes

scattered road salt

and bar napkins

with alcohol rings

(like lips)

which I

lean in

to kiss.
